The beginning of marathon training can be overwhelming. There are ways, however, to simplify marathon training nutrition. Here’s one famous plan…

“That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run. So I ran to the end of the road. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd run to the end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just run across Greenbow County. And I figured, since I run this far, maybe I'd just run across the great state of Alabama. And that's what I did. I ran clear across Alabama. For no particular reason I just kept on going. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on going. When I got tired, I slept. When I got hungry, I ate. When I had to go... you know... I went.” Forrest Gump

Well, there is a bit more to nutrition than this, but the idea is to just keep moving forward and simplify marathon training nutrition. You don’t always need a reason to pursue a nutrition goal…just move toward that goal, one step at a time. When you get there, set another goal. Let that goal be a springboard to another. Let nutrition success breed more success. Now you’re on a roll…you’ve made it to Greenbow County. When you’ve made it to the half marathon mark, turn around and head home to the finish line. Wherever you are, take it one step at a time.

It all comes down to moving forward. Some of us need a little more discipline than Forrest Gump, but maybe some of us need to relax and enjoy the journey. Eat, drink and be ready for 26.2!

Simplify Marathon Training Nutrition with Tip #6:

Just as a training plan gradually increases your mileage, that same training plan will have “cut back weeks”. For your marathon training nutrition, this is a good time to start “cutting back” on a food habit, like caffeine, sugary soda or alcohol. Think through why you are wanting the caffeine, sugar or glass of wine. Do you need a pick me up? You may just need rest. Need to slow down? Maybe a yoga class or conversation with non-running friends would work just as well.
